We often hear the saying, "Health is wealth," and it couldn't be truer.

We are a successful and thriving union, but a strong contract means little if members aren’t aware of our rights in the workplace and empowered to exercise them.

In this issue, we look back at the amazing work and incredible victories secured during the fall and winter of 2023, discuss helpful tips when considering retirement, and gear up for CAPE’s 60th Anniversary in 2024.

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the lives of millions of working people and our families, and CAPE is working tirelessly to limit the impact of this crisis on our health and livelihoods.

As you may be aware, L.A. County employees had the opportunity to join a lawsuit against the County of Los Angeles for underpaying overtime. Specifically, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) – the Country’s basic wage-and-hour law – describes how the overtime rate must be calculated and in a case known as Flores v. City of San Gabriel, the Federal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals held that the FLSA requires that health insurance cash-back payments (the amount of taxable cash you receive in your paycheck if unused to buy benefits in the Choices Plan) must be included in the overtime rate.

CAPE members in a variety of job classes will be receiving bonus pay as a result of the recently ratified salary contracts. Securing the bonuses was a tremendous victory, and CAPE members are justifiably asking when they should expect the bump in their paychecks.
